• Sciatica is the term given to pain experienced in the buttocks, legs and feet as a result of irritation of the sciatic nerve. The pain is typically felt from the lower back and down the back of the thigh to below the knee.

Sciatica is most often caused by a herniated disc that presses against the nerve and causes pain, though it can also be caused by irritation of the nerve from nearby bone or tumors. Additionally, certain factors have been identified that can increase the chance of sciatica developing which include pregnancy, being overweight, or smoking. Often there is no single immediate cause with the problem developing over time due to other injuries, muscle imbalances or degenerative conditions.

Traditionally extensive bed rest was prescribed as treatment for severe Sciatica – for as long as two weeks! However recent studies have proven that appropriate levels of activity are more beneficial. It is now recommended that moderate activity should be maintained, but heavy exertion such as gym sessions or heavy lifting should be avoided.

Sometimes medication can be prescribed such as pain relievers (paracetamol) and anti-inflammatory’s. Where the cause of pain is traced to muscle spasms, treatment may also include a muscle relaxant.

In conjunction with your health professional, Fruition Massage & Stretch Therapy can help alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with Sciatica.  Muscle relaxation as a result of massage therapy can help to diminish the pain caused by muscle spasm.

You’ll be pleased to know that the long-term outlook for recovery from sciatica can be very good, especially if it’s not a result of additional lower back trauma. As a general rule, most cases are resolved within four to eight weeks.

Not all Sciatica like symptoms are caused by nerve impingement.  It is very common to see people describing sciatica like symptoms that are actually emanating from trigger points in the the associated soft tissue.  Fruition Massage & Stretch Therapy will be able to treat the referred pain caused by these trigger points with stretching and massage. so don’t put up with the pain any longer.
