    Breathing

    It seems so simple-after all, we breathe all the time, right? However when we are under stress, breathing becomes shallow and closely spaced. In fact, it’s quite common for some people to hold their breath for short periods when undergoing something particularly intense! Paying attention to your breathing patterns can provide an important signal, and even just closing your eyes and taking three deep breaths can help you to relax and  think more clearly.

    Time with friends or time alone

    When it comes to social interaction, we’re not all wired the same! Some find large groups of people invigorating, others prefer solitude, spending time on their own, perhaps with a good book and a hot drink for company. Take time to recharge in whatever way is suited to you.  Pay attention to what makes you feel refreshed, and actively make time for people or a little solitude if that’s what you need.

    Visualisation

    Although a physical holiday can be hard to come by, meditating on a restful place real or imagined can make a tangible difference to your stress levels. Close your eyes and think of a place where your day to day cares melt away. Make it a fully sensory experience and imagine the sights, the sounds, the smells and even the warmth of the sun on your face. Enjoy the sense of relaxation that these peaceful surroundings bring  before carrying on with the rest of your day.
